Introducing the new BEARS Ski Team! BEARS Ski Team is the first phase of the new adventure sport program we are developing called “BEARS Adventure.” It is a program that introduces outdoor adventure sports to kids (roughly ages 5–16) in both a competitive and adventure capacity. All of the activities will take place in our beautiful river valley!
BEARS Ski Team will be teaching kids to XC ski race, and introduce them to XC backcountry skiing. In the Spring of 2012 we will introduce a mountain biking program. The long-term goal is that within 5 years it will be an exciting adventure program for kids, and will include both competitive and recreational components of XC skiing, mountain biking, climbing, river sports (canoe/kayak) and trail running.
The history of the North Saskatchewan River Valley extends over 2 million years. Currently a shallow meandering river of 1 to 3 meters in depth, the North Saskatchewan River originates at the Saskatchewan Glacier and the Columbia Icefields in Banff National Park, now a vestige of the Cordilleran ice sheet. As the river winds through the 88 kilometers of the Capital Region River Valley Park, an interesting story unfolds.
